STANDARD 6 – Instructional Delivery
The competent teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage students’ development of critical thinking, problem-solving, and performance skills.
Artifact: Algebraic Expressions Lesson Plan
Reflection:
The artifact for this standard is an algebraic expressions lesson plan that I created and taught to a 6th grade math class during my early field experience in Fall 2011 semester. This lesson plan uses a variety of instructional delivery strategies to encourage students’ development of critical thinking, problem-solving, and performance skills.
In this lesson plan I demonstrate my understanding of the principles, techniques, advantages, and limitations of instruction by including different types of instructional strategies throughout the lesson. I was able to enhance student learning in this lesson through the use of a wide variety of materials, such as student white boards as well as technological resources, such as the SMART Board. I used technology appropriately to accomplish instructional objectives and enhance my instructional delivery throughout the lesson. Further, I displayed my knowledge of the techniques for modifying instructional methods to facilitate learning for students with disabilities by including a small group activity, which promoted the inclusion of and participation from these students with disabilities in the classroom. I carefully evaluated how to achieve learning goals by planning to use different teaching strategies and materials for various instructional purposes so as to meet the needs of all students. These different teaching strategies worked to engage students in active learning opportunities and strongly promote their participation. The small group team activity greatly engaged the students and helped them assume responsibility for their learning and application of algebraic expressions. In this lesson I made sure to vary my role in the instructional process by being an instructor, facilitator, and audience at different times throughout the lesson.
Through this algebraic expression lesson plan I was able to practice using a variety of instructional strategies all in one lesson in order to enhance my instructional delivery and engage the students. I extended my thinking on what types of instructional strategies can be included in one lesson and their role in developing students’ learning. This artifact helped me improve my skills in including a diverse variety of instructional strategies within lessons in order to best deliver the academic content to the students.
