STANDARD 1 – Content Knowledge
The competent teacher understands the central concepts, methods of inquiry, and structures of the disciplines and creates learning experiences that make the content meaningful to all students.
Artifact: Social Studies Unit
Reflection:
The artifact for this standard is an entire social studies unit that I created through modification and enhancement of the original social studies curriculum implemented by the school I student taught at during my Spring 2013 semester. This was part of a unit analysis project that I had to complete as a part of my certification in education. In this social studies unit I not only understand the central concepts, methods of inquiry, and structures of the discipline, but also create learning experiences that make the content meaningful to all students.
In this artifact I demonstrate my understanding of major concepts, debates, principles, and theories that are central to elementary education by including diverse learning activities and multiple forms of assessment throughout the lessons. In creating this social studies unit I had to evaluate teaching resources and curriculum materials for their comprehensiveness, accuracy, and usefulness for representing particular ideas and concepts. I went further by modifying the unit based on my students’ needs and enhancing it extensively through the use of creative lesson activities or assessment measures and the addition of two extra lessons at the end that extend student understanding. I also show my understanding of the processes of inquiry important to elementary education by implementing independent research activities for students to complete using effective technologies. I designed several parts of this social studies unit in order to promote student skills in the use of technologies appropriate to the discipline. For example, my implementation of transparencies, the Promethean Board, Youtube videos, and the PebbleGo student-friendly website all helped to develop student knowledge and skills in the use of technology. I used differing viewpoints, theories, and methods of inquiry while teaching this social studies unit and made sure to include a variety of explanations and multiple representations of concepts that capture key ideas to help students develop conceptual understanding in each lesson. Furthermore, I facilitate learning experiences that made connections to other content areas such as art via the final Leader Art Portrait lesson plan.
This artifact greatly contributed to my growth as a professional educator in a multitude of ways. I gained serious practice in modification and enhancement of already prepared lessons and units provided to me by set curriculums used by the school through the creation of this artifact. I also learned how to extend student understanding by creating unique and engaging additional lessons for this social studies unit. I improved my skills of enhancement and creativity with instructional planning through this artifact. I absolutely loved teaching this social studies unit and know that this unit analysis process I did will serve as an excellent foundation for similar tasks I must complete as a future teacher.
