STANDARD 5 – Productivity Tools
The competent teacher will integrate advanced features of technology-based productivity tools to support instruction, extend communication outside the classroom, enhance classroom management, perform administrative routines more effectively, and become more productive in daily tasks.
Artifact: Research a Leader Lesson Plan
Reflection:
The artifact for this standard is a research lesson plan that I created and used with my second grade students during student teaching as a part of a social studies project. In this lesson plan the students had to use a specific website on the computer in order to research people in history who made a difference. Each student found out information on different important figures of the past using this technology and recorded it on worksheet.
This lesson plan incorporates the use of the technology-based productivity tools of the computer and online website called PebbleGo. Students accessed the PebbleGo website on their computers and navigated through it in order to find specific information on a leading figure in history who made a difference. This lesson plan effectively utilizes the electronic device of the PebbleGo website in the social studies content area for the specific-purpose of researching information. The PebbleGo website is quite user-friendly and communicates information on a wide variety of topics to young students visually and audibly. In this lesson I also used the classroom management strategy of differentiation during the second part of researching. For this differentiation I had students not only research more information on their leader of the past using PebbleGo, but also create an original sentence about one specific aspect of that leader’s life, occupation, or achievements. Each student wrote a different sentence on that particular historic leader so that when put all together at the end, the sentences made an informative paragraph about that person.
Through this artifact I was able to learn about the technology-based productivity tool: PebbleGo website, which proved to be a very effective resource for research with these younger students. I learned how to navigate through this online website and incorporate it in social studies for students to use to gather information about a specific leader in history. I also was able to practice my skills in planning for, organizing, and managing research projects with younger students. With this artifact I was able to learn more about how younger students conduct research with technology-based tools and what strategies tend to work best when implementing research with websites or computers during lessons or projects.
The competent teacher will integrate advanced features of technology-based productivity tools to support instruction, extend communication outside the classroom, enhance classroom management, perform administrative routines more effectively, and become more productive in daily tasks.
