STANDARD 2
All teachers should model effective reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills during their direct and indirect instructional activities. The most important communicator in the classroom is the teacher, who should model English language arts skills.
Artifact: Resume Building Lesson Plan
Reflection:
The artifact for this standard is a resume building lesson plan that I taught in my first grade placement classroom for the course CI 406 – Theory & Practice in Elementary School Teaching that I took Fall Semester 2012. In this lesson plan I (teacher) model effective writing, speaking, and listening skills while conducting whole class discussions and facilitating written activities.
In my lesson plan I model the rules of English grammar orally by using accurate complete sentences while instructing students on tasks that they need to complete and facilitating discussion regarding the videos shown. I also model the rules of English spelling, punctuation, and capitalization through the key words I write on the SMART Board as well as via the handout activity given to the students. I am able to understand and clearly convey ideas from the supplementary material of the Spongebob videos used in this lesson plan so that students can better grasp the major concepts and themes of the lesson. In my lesson plan I also express ideas orally using explanations of specific key terms and discussing examples of major concepts in order to scaffold the students understanding of resumes. I listen well to each of my student’s answers to questions and closely observe their independent work in order to inform myself of their progress and decide whether or not any modifications or additional accommodations are needed.
This artifact helped me to improve my ability to integrate technology and outside media sources into classroom instruction. I was able to utilize the SMART Board to write key terms up for the students to visualize and include the popular media resource of Spongebob Squarepants in the videos I showed to the class. I was also able to practice my worksheet making skills, as I had not yet had the opportunity before to do this with younger students. I created a useful worksheet for the students to work on that served not only as an integral step towards their Micro Society experiences, but also as an informal assessment for me to use in evaluation of my students’ understanding. Furthermore, this artifact deepened my thinking about the concept of resumes and how to effectively relay this multilayered construct to younger students who may well not have had any prior experience with them.
All teachers should model effective reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills during their direct and indirect instructional activities. The most important communicator in the classroom is the teacher, who should model English language arts skills.
