STANDARD 11 – Professional Conduct and Leadership
The competent teacher understands education as a profession, maintains standards of professional conduct, and provides leadership to improve students’ learning and well-being.
Artifact: No Child Left Behind Paper
Reflective Statement:
This standard refers to the idea that school policies, instructional procedures, and legal issues in education will all impact how I will teach and thus must be taken into consideration when I plan lessons and curriculum. I need to know and review all of these important aspects of professionalism as a teacher so that I can effectively instruct my students as well as adequately conduct myself and organize curriculum procedures so that they are in accordance with laws regarding educational practice in America. Furthermore, these school policies and legal guidelines that teachers are required to adhere to will help me to become a more aware and equipped teacher as well as a more developed professional leader.
The artifact that I chose for this standard is an essay that critically analyzes the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) and offers differing perspectives held today on the issues that this law sparks within our society. In this essay I investigate the procedures and impacts of accountability and testing within NCLB. These mandates of NCLB must be obeyed and carried out by all states, districts, and schools throughout the nation, which means that it directly affects the teacher in each classroom of America. This essay helped me to better understand legal issues in education and how they can affect school policies and procedures. In addition, it gave me greater comprehension of how school systems are organized and operate as well as how the roles of teachers, parents, students, and politicians all help shape the teaching profession. (B) My teaching will be greatly impacted by this assignment because I now understand how much legal issues, school policy, and professional conduct will impact my classroom and how I will be able to teach. I need to be aware of the current laws and political issues concerning education in America so that I can not only adhere to them adequately, but also take a leadership role in participating in policy design and development at whatever level I can whether it be local or national. Furthermore, it will make my skills of awareness as a teacher much more sharp and better my ability to incorporate all of the school policies and national standards into my curriculum.
Understanding education as a profession with the use of standards, appropriate conducts, and leadership will better prepare me for teaching in a diverse society because it will allow me to adhere to specific needs of differing students using the knowledge from appropriate behavior methods and leadership skills. In addition, it will help me stay engaged in the ever-changing political laws regarding education based on a diverse array of perspectives and opinions. Lastly, understanding how school systems are organized and operate will help me to more easily adjust to the wide range of school types across the nation and further, be able to teach these diverse groups of student
