STANDARD 10 – Reflection and Professional Growth
The competent teacher is a reflective practitioner who continually evaluates how choices and actions affect students, parents, and other professionals in the learning community and actively seeks opportunities to grow professionally.
Artifact: Video Analysis Reflection
Reflection:
The artifact for this standard is a detailed analysis and reflection paper on lessons that I taught and digitally recorded in a first grade classroom during my early field experience in the Fall 2012 semester. I digitally recorded these lessons so that my cooperating teacher and I could watch them on video afterwards and better reflect upon as well as evaluate my teaching as a growing professional.
In this detailed analysis paper I demonstrate my understanding that reflection is an integral part of professional growth and improvement of instruction. I collaborated with my cooperating teacher during the post-conferences when we carefully watched the videos of my teaching, reflected upon effective teaching strategies I was using in the lessons, and discussed ways for improvement in the future. This collaboration and my cooperating teacher’s feedback are explained in this reflection paper. I participated in professional dialogue with my cooperating teacher and used continuous learning to support my own development as a teacher. In this reflection paper I not only utilize classroom observation via digital recordings to reflect upon my teaching, but I also use pedagogical knowledge on education through the incorporation of research in this field by referencing several professional educational sources. Through this artifact I practice active reflection, evaluation, and revision of practice in the future in order to best improve and reach my full potential as a professional educator.
This artifact helped me grow in my abilities to reflect upon my teaching as a professional educator. I learned a new way of self-reflecting through the use of digital recorded videos of me teaching, which proved to be a very effective way to observe and analyze my teaching practices. I was able to collaborate with other professionals and gain practice using professional dialogue through the creation of this artifact. After examining how well this type of reflection activity works to identify strengths and areas of improvement in my teaching, I definitely plan to do this again in my future teaching career.
