STANDARD 8 – Assessment
The competent teacher understands various formal and informal assessment strategies and uses them to support the continuous development of all students.
Artifact: Science Web-Based Inquiry
Reflection:
The artifact for this standard is a web-based inquiry named “Space Exploration” for students to use in a science unit on space. This web-based inquiry is a virtual space unit online that students must effectively navigate, utilize, and follow in order to learn about space. This web-based inquiry uses a diverse array of assessment strategies to support the continuous learning and development of all students.
This web-based inquiry demonstrates my understanding of assessment as a means of evaluating how students learn, what they know and are able to do in meeting the Illinois Learning Standards, and what kinds of experience to include that will support their further growth and development. In the Teacher Guide page of this web-based inquiry I have listed the Illinois Learning Standards that this space unit addresses and explained how the different types of assessment experiences within this web quest foster students’ further growth through the objectives and assessment sections. I understand the diversity in ways students learn and therefore have included many different kinds of assessments with varying purposes and characteristics in order to meet the needs of all students. Through the creation of these individual, team, and summative assessments in this web-based inquiry I illustrate my understanding of how to construct and use assessments strategies and instruments for evaluation of student learning. I appropriately use a variety of informal assessments, such as the KWL chart and formal assessments, such as the final space exhibit to evaluate the understanding, progress, and performance of the individual student and the class as a whole. Furthermore, I have constructively included technology with the assessments in this artifact by having the entire science unit be accessible through a web-based medium.
I learned an extraordinary amount about assessment and web-based inquiries through this artifact. I had never before created a web-based inquiry and after designing this one for a science unit on space, I definitely understand its purpose in and advantage for independent learning. Through this artifact I was able to deepen my thinking on the diversity of assessments and expand my knowledge on creating interesting and engaging assessments for students to do that meet the necessary standards and objectives. I gained a lot of practice in creating websites and enhanced my skills in designing inquiry-based science units and assessments.
