STANDARD 2 – Personal and Professional Use of Technology
The competent teacher will apply tools for enhancing personal professional growth and productivity; will use technology in communicating, collaborating, conducting research, and solving problems and will promote equitable, ethical, and legal use of computer/technology resources.
Artifact: Parent Letter
Reflection:
The artifact for this standard is a parent letter that I created for my students’ guardians during my Fall Semester 2012 field placement at Stratton Elementary School in Champaign, IL. I typed this parent letter on the computer using Word Processing software to effectively and legibly get across all the necessary information to each of my students’ parents or guardians.
I used computer technology to effectively manage and communicate important information regarding my role in the classroom to all of my students’ parents/guardians. I utilized the productivity tool of Word Processing on the computer to type my parent letter so that I could communicate the information in the most neat and legible form possible. Through the creation of this parent letter I understood how to use technology for communication purposes and later realized that typing the letter on a computer would be the most efficient and effective way to transfer my important information over to my students’ parents/guardians. I used these computer-based technologies to enhance my personal and professional productivity as a future teacher by not only formally informing all of my students’ guardians of my student observer role in the classroom, but also by giving my students’ parents a personal snapshot of who I am and where I come from. I know that as a professional, effective teacher I need to constantly inform all of my students and their parents/guardians about what goes on in the classroom and whom they may be interacting with at school. I successfully used technology in this parent letter to practice these professional habits as a future teacher. Furthermore, I practiced my knowledge of ethical and legal use of technology through this artifact by understanding that it is legally approved and ethically sound to use a computer in order to create a parent letter to be used in the teaching profession.
This artifact helped me further develop as a teacher by allowing me to practice effective communication skills through the use of technology. I had never made a parent letter before, and through the process of creating this artifact I learned the correct format to use and specific components to include in a parent letter. This artifact allowed me to practice my typing and Word Processing skills on the computer. Moreover, it forced me to utilize my editing and critical thinking skills while reading over my first draft of the parent letter and deciding whether or not it included all of the necessary information for my students’ parents. This artifact encourages me to be a proactive, professional future teacher by always informing my students and their parents of any changes or additions made in the classroom.
