STANDARD 3
All teachers should give constructive instruction and feedback to students in both written and oral contexts while being aware of diverse learners’ needs. Teachers should effectively provide a variety of instructional strategies, constructive feedback, criticism, and improvement strategies.
Artifact: Telling Time Lesson Plan
Reflection:
The artifact for this standard is a first grade mathematics lesson plan introducing students to telling time using analogue clocks. During the implementation of this math lesson I was aware of diverse learners’ needs by effectively providing a variety of instructional strategies, constructive feedback, and improvement tactics for all students.
While teaching this lesson plan I demonstrated my understanding of how to properly analyze a student audience by constantly assessing student responses to questions I asked and then deciding whether or not I needed to possibly reword or rephrase them so as to make my communication more understandable and culturally appropriate for all students. I also analyzed the content materials prior to teaching the lesson in order to determine appropriate strategies to use in order to create successful learning. Through this precedent analysis process, I was able to decide on using mini-clock manipulatives at the end of the lesson as an effective informal assessment as well as a creative hands-on learning activity for the students. I used diverse instructional strategies by integrating modeled reading, lecturing, interactive movement, oral speaking, quiet listening, and hands-on activities with manipulatives all within this one lesson plan. I also had multiple modes of learning available to all students by including kinesthetic, visual, and auditory learning activities throughout the lesson. I included all of these types of learning strategies in the lesson plan because I know that all students learn best in different ways and providing those multiple ways of learning is a crucial part of lesson planning for teachers. Further, I used a variety of media including SMART Board, books, and hand-held clock manipulatives to enhance my instruction throughout the lesson. I effectively assisted my English Language Learner (ELL) students by visually displaying key vocabulary words related to time on the SMART Board. This strategy helped to scaffold their acquisition of the English language related to this lesson plan because it provided them with an additional visual display of key words along with the auditory transference of these words via my speaking them aloud. Finally, I conducted effective classroom discussions by asking questions while reading the story and summarizing the math content taught at the end of the lesson.
This artifact allowed me to practice my skills in creating diverse instructional strategies for all students to learn through. While creating this lesson plan I was able to critically assess the resources I had available to me and utilize them in the best way possible so as to make as many different instructional strategies and activities for the students throughout the entire lesson. I practiced using my knowledge of the different learning styles in order to create the most effective lesson plan that was clearly aware of diverse learners’ needs within the classroom.
