STANDARD 1 – Basic Computer/Technology Operations & Concepts
The competent teacher will use computer systems to run software; to access, generate, and manipulate data; and to publish results. He or she will also evaluate performance of hardware and software components of computer systems and apply basic trouble-shooting strategies as needed.
Artifact: Voice Thread
Reflection:
The artifact for this standard is a Voice Thread video that I created using the web-based application, VoiceThread. VoiceThread allows people to arrange collections of media like images, videos, documents, and presentations at the center of an asynchronous conversation. This form of technology permits people to have conversations or make comments using any mix of text, a microphone, a web cam, a telephone, or uploaded audio file. I used VoiceThread to create a professional development digital video on co-teaching.
I was able to demonstrate my understanding of how to run computer software with the creation of this artifact by downloading the basic VoiceThread software and using it to make my digital video. Although my final product uniquely and effectively explains the practice of co-teaching between a general educator and a special educator, it did not always run so smoothly due to the link to the video having some beginning glitches. Yet, as I worked through this I was able to implement basic troubleshooting techniques for this multi-media technology. I also used the imaging device of a video camera on my computer with the VoiceThread application in order to successfully record myself talking about co-teaching. Not only is co-teaching something that can be practiced in the educational setting, but VoiceThread is also. Through this artifact I am demonstrating my knowledge of using computers and technology for education and professional development purposes.
This artifact represents my further development in the use of technology for information sharing, educational, and professional development purposes. I was able to use the web-based application of VoiceThread to create a digital video on co-teaching that can be used to simply share information online or further professional development among educators. I had never used the technology of VoiceThread before on the computer, but absolutely enjoyed becoming familiar with it and further utilizing it to create an informational digital video. This artifact extended my thinking about the many ways that I can include technology operations and applications within the classroom to enhance my students’ learning.
