STANDARD 4 – Planning for Instruction
The competent teacher understands instructional planning and designs instruction based upon knowledge of the discipline, students, the community, and curriculum goals.
Artifact: Physical Education Scheduled Instructional Plan
Reflection:
The artifact for this standard is a physical education scheduled instructional plan. This artifact is broken up into two main parts with the first part being a yearlong overview of instructional lessons and the second part being a more detailed two-week block plan for a basketball unit. This artifact designs instructional planning based upon the knowledge of physical education, students, the community, and curriculum goals.
This physical education scheduled instructional plan incorporates the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) standards, curriculum development, and student development effectively throughout the yearlong and two-week block plan. The standards align with the curriculum and promote student development of physical education skills and abilities. This artifact reflects my understanding of how to develop short-term plans as shown in the detailed two-week block plan as well as long-range plans as illustrated with the yearlong overview, which are both consistent with curriculum goals, learner diversity, and learning theory. Each of these components was created to achieve the expectations for students’ learning in the class. I was able to create an effective bridge between students’ experiences and educational goals by taking into account individual student interests as well as professional needs while designing this instructional plan. I made sure to create multiple learning activities that allow for variation in students’ learning styles and performance modes as seen through the diversity of instant activities and yearlong lessons. Furthermore, I applied principles of scope and sequence while creating this physical education scheduled instructional plan by having each lesson build off the one before it, using appropriate materials in the discipline, and relating to student experiences and knowledge.
This artifact greatly contributed to my development in long-term planning as a teacher. I learned how to create a yearlong overview of daily lesson plans reflecting curriculum goals that must be taught in the physical education class. I also learned how to create more detailed physical education plans for a shorter time span with the two-week block plan. I had little practice designing instructional plans for a physical education class, but after creating this artifact I have greatly improved my skills in doing so and deepened my thinking about what all goes into the planning process over a long period of time.
